ISO 14001 Consultants & Environmental Management Implementation
Quality Resource Center (QRC) provides ISO 14001 consulting and implementation services for organizations building an environmental management system (EMS) that will pass a registrar audit and hold up in daily operations. We are based in San Jose, California, work on-site throughout Silicon Valley and the Bay Area, and support clients nationwide.
Since 1992, QRC’s implementation program has helped more than 1,000 organizations put ISO management systems in place.

Who ISO 14001 Consulting Is For
- Manufacturers and electronics firms whose customers or supply-chain agreements now require a certified EMS.
- Recyclers and materials handlers integrating ISO 14001 with R2, RIOS, or e-Stewards requirements.
- Regulated facilities managing air, water, waste, or hazardous-material obligations that want one system instead of scattered compliance files.
- Organizations with an existing ISO 9001 system looking to add environmental management without duplicating documentation.
Problems We Solve
- Aspects and impacts done badly. This is where most ISO 14001 systems fail. If the significance determination is not defensible, the objectives built on it are not either.
- Legal and other requirements left uncatalogued. Auditors look for evidence you know which regulations apply and how you evaluate compliance. We build that register with you.
- Duplicate systems. Running ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 as two separate binders doubles the maintenance. We integrate them.
- Objectives nobody measures. Environmental targets without measurement fail at surveillance audits. We define KPIs your team can actually collect.
- Implementation competing with production. Our approach is built so your operation keeps running while the system goes in.
How an ISO 14001 Engagement Works
- Complimentary consultation and quote. Scope, sites, target certification date, and existing compliance obligations.
- Gap analysis. Current practice measured against ISO 14001, with a written plan and owners.
- Aspects and impacts analysis. Identify environmental aspects across your activities, products, and services, and determine significance.
- Legal requirements register and risk analysis. Applicable regulations captured, with an evaluation-of-compliance method.
- Policy, objectives, and documentation. Environmental policy, measurable objectives, KPIs, procedures, and operational controls developed with your team.
- Training, internal audit, and management review. Staff trained on their roles, internal audits run, corrective and preventive action closed out, management review facilitated.
- Registrar audit support and ongoing maintenance. Preparation for the certification audit, then support through surveillance and recertification.
Expected outcome: a certified environmental management system with a defensible aspects-and-impacts basis, a current legal register, and objectives your management team can report on. Companies generally report that QRC’s quoted cost is significantly less than it would cost them to do the work themselves.

About the ISO 14001 Environmental Management Standard
ISO 14001 defines requirements for environmental management systems, specifying how an organization develops and implements policies and objectives that take into account legal requirements and information about significant environmental aspects. It applies to all manner of organizations and covers a wide array of geographical, cultural, and social conditions. It addresses the formal management of discharges to land, air, and water.
The system requires commitment from all levels and functions of the organization, most importantly from top management. It enables an organization to develop an environmental policy, establish objectives and processes to achieve the policy commitments, take action as needed to improve performance, and demonstrate the conformity of the system to the requirements of ISO 14001. The overall aim is to support environmental protection and prevention of pollution in balance with socio-economic needs.
ISO 14001 Questions We Hear Most
How long does ISO 14001 certification take?
For most organizations working with QRC, five to seven months from kickoff to the certification audit, depending on the number of sites and the complexity of your environmental aspects.
Can ISO 14001 be integrated with our existing ISO 9001 system?
Yes, and it usually should be. Both standards share the same high-level structure, so document control, internal audit, corrective action, and management review can be run once for both systems rather than twice.
What is the difference between an environmental aspect and an impact?
An aspect is an element of your activities, products, or services that can interact with the environment — a solvent emission, a waste stream, energy use. The impact is the resulting change to the environment, such as air or water pollution. Determining which aspects are significant is the foundation of the whole system.
Do we need ISO 14001 if we already hold R2 or e-Stewards?
R2 and e-Stewards both expect a functioning environmental management system, and organizations frequently certify to ISO 14001 alongside them. We implement these together so one set of documentation serves both.
